I used to have a giant stack of fashion magazines. It included Vogue and Harper's from the 90's and some random titles. When I moved to New York, hauling stacks of magazines became cumbersome, that and the fact that a city apartment didn't allow for the same amount of storage that my previous Pittsburgh house did. Though I did hold on to my favorites.
Earlier this year I was looking through my stash and noticed a story in a 2004 issue of Flaunt Magazine with Kirsten Dunst on the cover. It was called "C-Squat." I immediately showed my boyfriend. His band mates live in this relic of NYC history which came about when the city was down and out. Landlords just deserted what they couldn't fix or pay for. This is when C Squat became inhabited. The building was bought by the city and now all of the crusty punks and wayward musicians pay rent and they are obligated to bring the building up to city codes. Not very rock n' roll as it was in the day.
Though, from the pictures in Flaunt, the inside of the place looks very much the same as it did years ago. Graffiti, plenty of art and anarchist strewn jargon on the walls. And, Meow, the scruffy cat in the photo, is still six years later is living in the basement, happily catching mice and roaches.
