New York Fashion Week Spring 2011 - Malandrino

Catherine Malandrino

Catherine Malandrino was born in Grenoble, France. She started her career with notable lines such as Diane von Furstenberg and Emanuel Ungaro. She started her own line in 2001 and has since went on to build 11 boutiques of her own and is carried in more than 400 retailers around the world.

Colors: gray, black, ocean blue, ivory

Materials: macrame, cotton gauze, silk jersey, suede, leather

Loved Looks

In what has shaped up to be a ho-hum fashion week thus far, Malandrino was finally gave pieces to study and be excited about. Every piece was flawlessly detailed, including covet-able accessories: macrame handbags and sandals, stone jewelry, straw hats and belts. Malandrino to me, has always been completely gorgeous or a total miss. There seems to be no in between with her designs. With this presentation, there were undeniably more hits and very few misses. She and her line are both sexy, sexy sexy. Buyers should grab those sandals in bulk along with the long Grecian style dress and leather pieces. I know I will be saving up my hard earned cash for a piece or two.

Unloved Looks

Swim or body suit or Hustler store? While I appreciate the detail and know this can easily be rocked in an arty editorial, seeing it there, on a pedestal in real life seemed x-rated. The male custodial staff on the second floor of the Lincoln Center buildings had their faces pressed against the overlooking windows. I guess they felt the same.

Music

Shes French, so why not play french music? Songs included Tout Doucement by Fiest and Rever Le Nez En Lair by Francoise Hardy.

People and Scene

Catherine Malandrino chose an outdoor location for her presentation. For me, presentations are the way to go and especially when there is an amazing back drop like the slanted grass covered structure and man-made "lake" in front of Paul Milstein Pool and Terrace at Lincoln Center. I like the idea that everyone is standing, no one is more important than anyone else. We were all there to see the clothes.

To Gift or Not to Gift: No special swag at this event, which plays nicely into the idea that only the most important people are worthy of sponsored stuff in a bag.
